World Coleo Encounter in Villavicencio
Villavicencio's World Coleo Encounter, first held on 12 October 1997 at the purpose-built Manga Benedicto Cely arena, gathers competitors from Colombia, Venezuela, Mexico, Spain and the United States for coleo - the llanero sport of bringing down a running steer by its tail from horseback. Rooted in the eastern plains' cattle-ranching culture, it runs every October in Meta department's capital.
Coleo, the llanero sport in which a mounted rider brings down a running steer by grasping and turning its tail, found its first dedicated world-scale competition in Villavicencio after land on the old cattle road of the departmental Campoalegre farm was allocated in 1992 for a purpose-built arena.
