Bantous de la Capitale Rumba Heritage Celebration in Brazzaville

Les Bantous de la Capitale, founded in 1959 by six musicians who broke from TP OK Jazz and Rock-a-Mambo, remain the oldest continuously active Congolese rumba orchestra and the only pre-independence-era band still performing. Heritage celebrations honoring the group, tied to anniversaries and tribute concerts in Brazzaville and abroad, mark one of Central Africa's clearest living links to rumba's founding generation.

In April 1959, six Congolese musicians met in Leopoldville, across the river from Brazzaville, to plan a new orchestra out of two already-storied bands: Jean-Serge Essous, who had led TP OK Jazz in 1956, singer Edouard Nganga known as Ganga Edo, Celestin Kouka called Celio, guitarist Daniel Loubelo known as De la Lune, Nino Dieudonne Malapet, founder of Rock-a-Mambo in 1957, and Saturnin Pandi, also from Rock-a-Mambo.
