Te Maeva Nui Drumming Competition in Avarua/Rarotonga
The Te Maeva Nui Drumming Competition is the pate and pa'u drum contest held in and around Avarua as part of the wider Te Maeva Nui festival leading up to Constitution Day. District and church teams compete on timing, complexity and stamina, providing the rhythmic backbone that the festival's dance groups perform to. Performances are outdoor, informal to watch, and one of the more accessible entry points into the festival program.
Drumming is the pulse that runs underneath every other Te Maeva Nui event, and the drumming competition gives it a stage of its own.
