The story

Monteverde Music Festival in Monteverde

Founded in 1992 by Canadian musician Margaret Adelman as a classical-music residency in a Monteverde villa, this festival broadened to other genres by 1999 before nearly dying out under the Monteverde Institute's stewardship in the early 2000s, until Gloria Waissbluth and Patricia Maynard revived it. Now held between December and March at the Bromelias Music Garden and the Monteverde Institute, programming spans jazz, classical, Afro-Caribbean and Latin American music.

The Monteverde Music Festival began in 1992, when Canadian musician Margaret Adelman brought classical musicians from San Jose to a villa in Monteverde for an extended residency, drawing music lovers up into the cloud forest community three times a week to hear performances running from sunset into the night.

What is special

The part that makes it specific.

01

The place changes

Few small-town music festivals have as well-documented a near-collapse-and-rescue story as this one: institutional handover to the Monteverde Institute in 2000 nearly ended the festival within a few years, until two specifically named figures from Costa Rica's classical-music establishment deliberately revived it

02

The mystery stays covered

Its setting within Monteverde, a Quaker-founded cloud-forest conservation community rather than a conventional Costa Rican town, gives outdoor and small-venue performances a genuinely distinctive natural backdrop

03

The city starts moving

Proceeds directed toward funding local school music programmes since the festival's earliest years tie its continued operation to a documented educational mission alongside its concert programming
