The story

HONK! Costa Rica in Santo Domingo

First held on 22 September 2019 to mark Santo Domingo de Heredia's 150th anniversary, HONK! Costa Rica belongs to an international network of more than twenty-one fanfare and brass-band festivals worldwide. It centres on cimarrona, Costa Rica's traditional brass-and-percussion street-band music historically rooted in Heredia province, with the local Original Domingueña Cimarrona having represented the country at European HONK! festivals in 2022.

What is special

The part that makes it specific.

01

The place changes

Belonging to an international HONK! network of more than twenty-one festivals worldwide gives Santo Domingo's edition a documented global street-band-movement context few Costa Rican music festivals share, connecting local cimarrona tradition directly to fanfare and brass festivals on other continents

02

The mystery stays covered

Reciprocal exchange within that network, evidenced by the Original Domingueña Cimarrona's participation in four European festivals in 2022, reflects genuine two-way cultural exchange rather than Costa Rica simply hosting visiting international acts

03

The city starts moving

Timing the festival's 2019 founding specifically to Santo Domingo's 150th anniversary ties its origin to a documented civic milestone rather than an independent cultural-calendar launch
