Korcula Sword Dance Festival in Korcula
The Korcula Sword Dance Festival gathers all eight of the island's sword dance groups, including Korcula town's two-sword Moreska and the villages' linked single-sword Kumpanjija, in one programme, a format created in 1997 and revived in 2014 after a decade-long pause. Outside the festival, the Moreska is separately performed each 29 July.
The sword dances of Korcula island trace to Mediterranean traditions common in the twelfth and thirteenth centuries, reaching the island from Italy and Dubrovnik by the sixteenth century, with the oldest documented evidence coming from a 1620 record of a Kumpanjija group in the village of Zrnovo and a 1666 town journal reference to Moreska performers in Korcula town.
