The story

Sibenik Dance Festival in Sibenik

Founded in 2011, Sibenik Dance Festival stages international contemporary choreography inside the city's medieval fortresses, St. Michael's and Barone, plus urban squares and, in recent years, additional venues in nearby Vodice, running roughly a week each July on the Dalmatian coast. Recent editions have hosted work by internationally recognized choreographers including Andonis Foniadakis, Xie Xin and Rami Be'er.

Sibenik Dance Festival began in 2011 and has grown since then into one of the more recognizable contemporary dance events in this part of Europe, built specifically around pairing international choreography with the medieval fortifications that ring the city rather than a conventional theatre setting.

What is special

The part that makes it specific.

01

The place changes

The festival's core identity rests on deliberately juxtaposing centuries-old fortress architecture with genuinely contemporary choreography, staging modern dance inside stone walls built for medieval defense rather than in a conventional theatre, a contrast organizers treat as the event's defining visual signature rather than a mere scenic backdrop for the performances

02

The mystery stays covered

Hosting internationally recognized choreographers such as Andonis Foniadakis, Xie Xin and Rami Be'er gives the festival credibility within the professional contemporary dance world rather than functioning purely as local tourist entertainment
