The story

Varazdin Baroque Evenings in Varazdin

Varazdin Baroque Evenings fills the palaces, churches and castles of Croatia's best-preserved baroque town with period-instrument performances of authentic baroque repertoire, spread across roughly two weeks each autumn since the festival's founding in 1971. Concerts extend beyond the town itself into castles and churches in the surrounding region, drawing early-music specialists and audiences from across Europe.

The idea for a festival built around Varazdin's baroque architecture was first raised in 1968, during celebrations marking the 140th anniversary of the town's music school, and it took shape in 1971 as a modest three-day gathering, one of the few events in Europe at the time devoted specifically to baroque and early music.

What is special

The part that makes it specific.

01

The place changes

Concerts are staged inside the actual baroque-era palaces, churches and castles the music was composed for, performed on reconstructed period instruments rather than modern ones, so the architecture, the instruments and the repertoire all share the same seventeenth and eighteenth-century register at once

02

The mystery stays covered

Few festivals anywhere align venue, instrument and score this closely, since organizers select each programme specifically to match the acoustic and historical character of the room it will be performed in, rather than adapting one fixed touring programme to whatever hall happens to be available that evening
