The story

Summer on Stross in Zagreb

Summer on Stross, or Ljeto na Strosu, turns Zagreb's historic Strossmayer promenade in the Upper Town into a nightly open-air music venue from late May through early September, with programming centered on jazz and music from the 1950s through the 1980s. The programme is one of the longest continuously running recurring events on Zagreb's calendar.

Summer on Stross, known locally as Ljeto na Strosu and also referred to informally as Strossmartre, takes its name and setting from Strossmayer's promenade, a walkway built along the southern edge of Zagreb's Upper Town starting in 1812 and completed the following year, named after the influential nineteenth-century Croatian bishop and politician Josip Juraj Strossmayer.

What is special

The part that makes it specific.

01

The place changes

The festival runs along a promenade built in 1812 and 1813, meaning its modern nightly concert programme is staged on one of the oldest continuously used public walking routes in Zagreb, with views over the Lower Town unchanged in character since the promenade's construction two centuries ago

02

The mystery stays covered

Rather than concentrating into a single festival week, the programme extends across roughly four months, giving it one of the longest durations of any recurring cultural event in the city
