The story

The Courtyards Zagreb in Zagreb

The Courtyards, or Dvorista, first held in July 2015, opens the normally hidden palace courtyards of Zagreb's Upper Town for a set run of summer evenings, pairing live music with food and drink in a different historic courtyard each night. Its guiding phrase holds that every courtyard has its own story to tell.

Dvorista, known in English as The Courtyards, held its first edition from 17 to 26 July 2015, built around a specific concept: that the hidden courtyards behind the grand facades of Zagreb's Upper Town palaces, ordinarily closed off from public view, could be opened for a set number of summer evenings as informal live music and gathering spaces.

What is special

The part that makes it specific.

01

The place changes

The festival grants public access to courtyards ordinarily closed off behind palace facades, including spaces like the Archaeological Garden and the Erdody-Kegelevic Palace courtyard, meaning much of its distinct appeal lies in the venues themselves rather than only the music performed inside them

02

The mystery stays covered

Across its first decade the festival accumulated more than 600 individual musical performances, and it has drawn outside recognition including a dedicated segment on BBC Travel and domestic tourism awards for creative and innovative programming
