Changui, a musical genre that has been sustained within families since roughly the 1860s and 1870s, emerged from coffee and sugar cane plantation communities in the mountainous zones around Guantanamo, Yateras, El Salvador and Manuel Tames, created by peasant, working-class and Black musicians using tres, bongo, marimbula, guayo and maracas, instruments built with traditional techniques passed from fathers to sons.
