The story

Cubadisco in Havana

Founded in 1997 to give Cuba's growing recorded music industry a shared forum and a balanced competition between Cuban and foreign labels, Cubadisco is the country's leading international music fair, awarding the Black Phonograph across more than twenty-five genre categories. Each edition dedicates itself to a specific country and musical genre, combining industry conferences and record launches with concerts across multiple Havana venues.

Cubadisco was created in 1997 to solve a specific industry problem: as Cuba's recorded music sector grew, with six record companies operating by that year, producers and executives needed a shared forum for exchange and a genuinely fair, ecumenical competition that could balance the interests of Cuban and foreign labels alike, and the first International CUBADISCO Fair delivered both.

What is special

The part that makes it specific.

01

The place changes

Cubadisco's defining structural feature is its rotating thematic focus, a different partner country and musical genre highlighted each year, alongside individual tributes to Cuban musicians, which keeps more than a quarter-century of editions from repeating the same format

02

The mystery stays covered

Its prize jury draws specifically on musicologists, critics and specialised broadcast programme directors rather than a purely commercial industry panel, giving the Black Phonograph awards a level of professional scrutiny distinct from typical music industry prizes

03

The city starts moving

Few countries run a comparably structured national recording-industry fair combining trade functions with a full public concert programme
