Festival de Habaneras in Havana
Held in Havana since 1985 during the first days of November to coincide with the city's own founding anniversary, the Festival de Habaneras aims to revive new composition within the habanera genre, which originated in Havana around 1825 with the first published habanera appearing in 1842, through concerts, serenades and composition contests, honoring a Cuban musical tradition that later crossed the Atlantic to take root in Spanish coastal towns.
Havana has staged its Festival de Habaneras since 1985, timing the event to the first days of November each year to coincide with the anniversary festivities of the Villa de San Cristobal de La Habana, the city's own founding celebration.
