Founded December 24, 1913, by the Lastra brothers from Caibarien, Punta Alegre's parrandas pit El Yeso, named for local gypsum extraction, against La Salina, named for salt production, in a celebration distinguished by floats mounted directly on boats and fireworks launched over the water, part of the central Cuban parranda tradition recognized by UNESCO as Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.
