Festival Cultural Vinales

Vinales valley, recognised in 1999 as the first UNESCO Cultural Landscape in the Americas for its surviving traditional tobacco-growing methods amid dramatic karst hills, anchors Pinar del Rio's identity as Cuba's tobacco heartland. A festival independently branded Festival Cultural Vinales, distinct from this general valley heritage and its tourism infrastructure, could not be confirmed with its own founding date or programme in available sources.

The Vinales valley, settled from the sixteenth century and developed through the eighteenth as a tobacco-growing region, became in 1999 the first site in the Americas that UNESCO recognised as a Cultural Landscape, specifically citing the survival of traditional agricultural methods, above all tobacco cultivation, within a striking karst landscape of steep-sided limestone hills called mogotes.
