The story

Fikardou Heritage Festival in Fikardou

Fikardou, a quasi-abandoned village declared an Ancient Monument in 1978 and placed on UNESCO's World Heritage Tentative List, holds a Festival of Tradition inviting visitors to walk its preserved eighteenth- and nineteenth-century streets. Two houses, awarded by Europa Nostra in 1987 and 1988, now operate as public museums run by the Department of Antiquities among the village's forty surviving 1920s houses.

Only a handful of permanent residents remain in Fikardou, a settlement the Cyprus Department of Antiquities declared an Ancient Monument by law in 1978, formally protecting the eighteenth- and nineteenth-century houses and traditional mountain architecture that place the entire village on UNESCO's World Heritage Tentative List as an exceptional example of a preserved traditional mountain settlement.

What is special

The part that makes it specific.

01

The place changes

What distinguishes Fikardou's festival is its subject itself: a nearly abandoned but formally protected village, home to only a handful of permanent residents, whose entire architectural fabric, forty surviving 1920s houses with genuine folk woodcuts, sits on UNESCO's World Heritage Tentative List

02

The mystery stays covered

Rather than celebrating a crop or craft product, the festival centres on architectural memory and preservation, with two Europa Nostra-awarded houses converted into public museums giving the event a genuine heritage-conservation dimension uncommon among Cyprus's produce-focused village celebrations
