Pafos Aphrodite Festival in Paphos
The Pafos Aphrodite Festival has staged a full outdoor opera production at the square facing Paphos's medieval harbour castle every September since 1999, with three performances across a single weekend. Past productions include Verdi's La Traviata, Puccini's Tosca, Bizet's Carmen and Mozart's The Magic Flute, performed under open sky with the illuminated fortress as part of the set.
A full opera production staged in front of a genuine medieval castle at Paphos harbour, under open sky with the Mediterranean itself as backdrop and the illuminated fortress walls doubling as part of the set, is the format the Pafos Aphrodite Festival has run every year since 1999, making it one of Cyprus's longest-continuously-staged opera traditions and a rare instance of a full-scale production mounted entirely outdoors against a working medieval fortification rather than a purpose-built opera house.
