The story

Jizerska 50 in Bedřichov/Jizera Mountains

Jizerska 50 began in January 1968 with fifty-two competitors racing between Bedrichov and Korenov, organised as fitness training for mountaineers, and has run as the Peru Expedition Memorial since 1972, commemorating fifteen Czechoslovak climbers killed in a 1970 Huascaran avalanche, several of whom had raced Jizerska months earlier. Now part of the international Worldloppet series since 2000, it is billed as the Czech Republic's greatest cross-country ski race.

Jizerska 50 began in January 1968, when fifty-two competitors from the ski club of Liberec took part in a race through the Jizera Mountains between Bedrichov and Korenov and back, organised as a fitness test for mountaineers from the TJ Lokomotiva Liberec club preparing for serious high-altitude expeditions.

What is special

The part that makes it specific.

01

The place changes

Few major international ski races carry as specific and sombre a memorial purpose as Jizerska 50: held annually since 1972 as the Peru Expedition Memorial, it commemorates fifteen named Czechoslovak climbers killed by a 1970 earthquake-triggered avalanche on Huascaran, several of whom had themselves competed in the race only months before their deaths

02

The mystery stays covered

Growth from fifty-two competitors in 1968 to almost seven thousand by 1978 reflects an unusually steep rise for a winter endurance sport in a country without a long prior cross-country skiing race tradition at that scale

03

The city starts moving

Joining the Worldloppet series in 2000 placed it among a small, globally recognised circuit of the world's major long-distance cross-country ski races, a status distinct from being merely the largest national race
