Janacek Brno Festival in Brno
Janacek Brno began in 2004 to mark the 150th anniversary of composer Leos Janacek's birth and became a formal biennial festival in 2008, built entirely around performing his operatic works by international and Czech companies. It won the International Opera Awards' festival prize in both 2018 and 2024, a distinction shared with only a handful of festivals worldwide including Salzburg and Aix-en-Provence.
Janacek Brno began as a one-off event in 2004, staged to mark the 150th anniversary of composer Leos Janacek's birth by performing all of his operas across a single festival, an ambition that proved popular enough to become a recurring biennial event from its formal launch in 2008.
