The story

Brutal Assault in Jaroměř/Josefov

Brutal Assault, running since 1996 and originally focused on grindcore, has staged its extreme metal festival inside the eighteenth-century Josefov fortress near Jaromer since 2008. Stages sit among the fortress's star-shaped bastions and brick ramparts, while its underground catacombs host horror-film screenings and dark-art exhibitions, drawing over ten thousand attendees in its first year at the site and growing since.

Brutal Assault started in 1996 as a grindcore-focused gathering, more than a decade before it found the venue now central to its identity: the eighteenth-century Josefov fortress outside Jaromer, an army stronghold built between 1780 and 1787 under Emperor Joseph the Second as a defensive bulwark against Prussian expansion that, in the end, never saw major combat.

What is special

The part that makes it specific.

01

The place changes

The Josefov fortress setting is what separates Brutal Assault from other European extreme metal festivals: a genuine eighteenth-century military stronghold, built 1780-1787 against a Prussian threat that never materialised, complete with star-shaped bastions, deep moats and underground catacombs still used today for horror-film screenings and dark, marginal art exhibitions

02

The mystery stays covered

Stone pubs and chill-out areas built directly into the fortifications give attendees shelter that a standard festival field cannot offer

03

The city starts moving

Having run continuously since 1996, with its move to Josefov in 2008 marking a scale shift to over ten thousand attendees in the first year alone, the festival has kept its underground character even as it expanded
