Smetana's Litomysl in Litomyšl
Smetana's Litomysl began in 1949 on the 125th anniversary of Bedrich Smetana's birth in the brewery building within Litomysl Castle, his actual birthplace. Staged in the castle's open courtyard amphitheatre and its baroque castle theatre, the opera and classical music festival uses a UNESCO-listed Renaissance building, decorated with roughly eight thousand individual sgraffito designs, as its permanent home.
Smetana's Litomysl began in 1949, timed to the 125th anniversary of composer Bedrich Smetana's birth in the brewery building within Litomysl Castle, where his father worked as brewmaster for the local Waldstein family; the festival's simple, direct name, tying it to Smetana and his birthplace, stuck from that first edition and has never changed.
