The story

Khamoro World Roma Festival in Prague

Khamoro, meaning sunshine in Romani, was founded in Prague in 1999 by Jelena and Dzemil Silajdzic with backing from the city's mayor, cultural councillor and the Czech Ministry of Culture. Held each year in the last week of May, it mixes traditional and contemporary Romani music, gypsy jazz, film, dance workshops and seminars, drawing around ten thousand visitors as the world's largest professional Romani culture festival.

Khamoro, Romani for sunshine, was founded in Prague in 1999 by Jelena and Dzemil Silajdzic, a couple who had left Sarajevo after the wars in the former Yugoslavia and encountered xenophobia after settling in their new home city.

What is special

The part that makes it specific.

01

The place changes

Few festivals dedicated to a single minority culture carry the level of civic institutional backing Khamoro secured from its earliest editions, direct support from Prague's mayor, its cultural councillor and the national Ministry of Culture, rather than operating as a grassroots event without official recognition

02

The mystery stays covered

Its founders deliberately built the programme around music, film, dance, exhibitions and academic seminars together, a breadth intended specifically to counter the stereotype that Romani cultural contribution begins and ends with music

03

The city starts moving

Being widely regarded as the world's largest and best-known professional Romani culture festival, drawing around ten thousand visitors annually, gives it a scale and reputation that few culturally specific festivals of any kind achieve internationally
