The story

Prague Fringe Festival in Prague

Prague Fringe, founded in 2001 by Angus Coull, Carole Wears and Steven Gove and modelled on Edinburgh's Fringe, grew from around four hundred attendees at its 2002 debut to roughly six thousand in recent editions, programming more than two hundred artists across some two hundred and fifty performances. All shows run across eight venues in Mala Strana, including Studio Rubin, an underground performance space operating continuously since 1967 and a Fringe venue since 2003.

Prague Fringe was founded in 2001 by Angus Coull, Carole Wears and Steven Gove, explicitly modelled on Edinburgh's Festival Fringe, and its inaugural 2002 edition was a modest affair by comparison, drawing roughly four hundred attendees to a first programme far smaller than what the festival would become.

What is special

The part that makes it specific.

01

The place changes

Few fringe festivals outside Edinburgh itself have sustained a comparable multi-decade run: Prague Fringe, explicitly modelled on the Edinburgh original, has grown from roughly four hundred attendees at its 2002 debut to around six thousand in recent editions

02

The mystery stays covered

Its eight-venue footprint across Mala Strana includes genuinely distinct architectural spaces, from a medieval hotel basement to conventional black-box theatres, letting audiences move between very different settings within a single compact historic neighbourhood

03

The city starts moving

Studio Rubin, a Fringe venue since 2003, has itself operated as an underground performance space since 1967, giving one stop on the circuit a performance history considerably older than the festival that now uses it
