The story

Strings of Autumn in Prague

Founded in 1996 when President Vaclav Havel had two young curators build a new music programme inside normally closed sections of Prague Castle, Strings of Autumn lost that access and its funding in 2004 under his successor, relocating to venues including the Rudolfinum and the Estates Theatre. After twenty-five years under that name, the festival rebranded as Prague Sounds in 2022, keeping its wide-ranging classical, jazz and crossover programming.

Strings of Autumn began in 1996 under an arrangement few festivals could replicate: President Vaclav Havel personally hired two young curators, Marek Vrabec and Martin Pechanec, to build a new music programme using parts of Prague Castle not normally open to the public.
