The story

Kopanice Festival in Starý Hrozenkov

The Kopanice Festival traces its roots to a Brotherhood Linden Tree planted on the Czechoslovak-Slovak border between Stary Hrozenkov and Drietoma in 1922, formalised into an annual festival in 1956 and continuing ever since. Celebrating the Kopanice region, Moravia's smallest but most distinctive folklore area, it draws more than thirty ensembles and around ten thousand Saturday spectators, with a recently added folk craft market.

The Kopanice Festival's roots trace back to April 30th, 1922, when residents on both sides of the border between Stary Hrozenkov and the Slovak village of Drietoma planted a Brotherhood Linden Tree, an act organised initially by local Sokol sporting associations to mark cross-border friendship in a region where the dialect, dance and songs are already strongly shaped by proximity to Slovakia.

What is special

The part that makes it specific.

01

The place changes

Few folklore festivals can trace their origin to as specific and dated an act as the Kopanice Festival can: a Brotherhood Linden Tree planted on the Czechoslovak-Slovak border on April 30th, 1922, by local Sokol associations, giving the tradition a documented interwar founding moment rather than vague ancient roots

02

The mystery stays covered

The Kopanice region itself is Moravia's smallest folklore area yet among its most culturally distinct, its temperamental dance style and dialect shaped by proximity to Slovakia and an eighteenth-century wave of Slovak settlers who colonised the hilly, hoe-farmed terrain that gives the region its name

03

The city starts moving

The festival's seven decades of continuous formal operation, on top of the informal cross-border gatherings that preceded it, give it a documented multi-generational continuity
