The story

TrutnOFF Open Air Festival in Trutnov

TrutnOFF traces back to 1984, when State Security police broke up its first attempted edition near Trutnov and arrested organiser Martina 'Geronimo' Vecheta before the festival could begin; a second attempt in 1987 was also suppressed. Running annually and openly since 1990 following the Velvet Revolution, it is now known as Czech Woodstock and recognised as the country's oldest festival of its kind.

TrutnOFF's origins reach back to October 1984, when a small independent festival planned near Trutnov was broken up before it could even begin, with State Security police arresting organiser Martina Vecheta, known as Geronimo, and his band before they reached the venue, a stark illustration of how underground music was policed under late-Communist Czechoslovakia.

What is special

The part that makes it specific.

01

The place changes

Few festivals anywhere have a founding history this directly entangled with state suppression: TrutnOFF's first two attempted editions, in 1984 and 1987, were both broken up by Communist-era State Security police, with the 1984 organiser arrested before reaching the venue

02

The mystery stays covered

That history gives its uninterrupted annual run since 1990 genuine weight as a marker of post-revolution cultural freedom rather than simply a festival's founding date

03

The city starts moving

Its nickname, Czech Woodstock, and its standing as the country's oldest festival of its kind both trace directly back to that suppressed origin rather than to an arbitrary early founding year unconnected to political history
