The story

Ride of the Kings Vlcnov in Vlčnov

The Ride of the Kings, a Pentecost-season procession of young men on decorated horses guarding a disguised boy King dressed in women's ceremonial costume, has run in largely its current form in Vlcnov since 1808. UNESCO inscribed the tradition on its Intangible Cultural Heritage list in 2011; Vlcnov stages it annually, making it the most reliably accessible of the several Moravian villages that observe the custom on different multi-year schedules.

The Ride of the Kings has been celebrated in largely its current form in Vlcnov since 1808, though its actual origins are older and murkier, tangled up with a folk legend claiming the tradition began when the Hungarian king Matthias Corvinus disguised himself as a girl, complete with a rose held in his mouth to hide his face, while fleeing rival Bohemian king Jiri z Podebrad.

What is special

The part that makes it specific.

01

The place changes

Few living folk traditions combine ritual cross-dressing, mock-heraldic procession and improvised, often satirical verse the way the Ride of the Kings does: the boy King and his pageboys wear women's ceremonial costume specifically to obscure identity, per the tradition's founding legend, while chanters deliver spontaneous rhymes commenting on individual spectators as the procession passes

02

The mystery stays covered

UNESCO's 2011 inscription recognises the tradition across several villages that each observe it on a different cycle, annually in Vlcnov, every two or three years in Kunovice and Hluk, and only occasionally in Skoronice, making Vlcnov's yearly staging the most consistently accessible version for visitors

03

The city starts moving

The custom's documented form dates to 1808, though its origin legend, tied to a fugitive Hungarian king in disguise, reaches back centuries further into folklore rather than confirmed history
