The story

Wenge Musica Heritage Festival in Bandal/Kinshasa

Bandalungwa produced one of Congolese music's defining rivalries when teenage friends founded Celio Stars in 1979 and renamed the group Wenge Musica in 1981. The band's rumba-driven, dance-forward sound eventually split into two camps led by Werrason and JB Mpiana, both still active today. A heritage festival built on this lineage centers Bandal's own chapter of Kinshasa's music history, distinct from the earlier African Jazz generation.

Bandalungwa, the Kinshasa commune Congolese shorten to Bandal, gave Congolese music one of its most consequential bands when a group of teenage friends formed Celio Stars in 1979 and renamed themselves Wenge Musica two years later, on 16 July 1981.

What is special

The part that makes it specific.

01

The place changes

The festival's real distinction is generational: where classic rumba and African Jazz belong to the 1950s and 1960s, Wenge Musica's story is 1980s and 1990s Bandal, built on ndombolo's harder dance pulse rather than rumba's romantic guitar lines

02

The mystery stays covered

Its most quoted chapter is the 1997 split into Wenge Musica BCBG and Wenge Musica Maison Mere, a rivalry that shaped Congolese pop for a decade and still surfaces in tribute sets today

03

The city starts moving

Because the commune still holds the bars and rehearsal rooms where the split-era bands played, the setting carries genuine neighborhood memory rather than a staged backdrop
