The story

People's Meeting Bornholm in Allinge/Bornholm

Folkemodet, The People's Meeting, has run in Allinge on Bornholm since 2011, drawing up to 65,000 visitors and near-total participation from Danish members of parliament across more than 2,000 free political events hosted by upward of 650 organisations over four days each June. Deliberately sited on an island away from Copenhagen, it creates an informal, camp-like atmosphere for direct dialogue between politicians and ordinary citizens.

All 179 members of the Danish parliament are, in principle, reachable in one small harbour town for four days each June, when Folkemodet, literally The People's Meeting, transforms Allinge, a town of a few thousand on the island of Bornholm, into the country's largest platform for open political dialogue between decision-makers and ordinary citizens.

What is special

The part that makes it specific.

01

The place changes

Folkemodet's genuine distinction is direct political access at a scale few countries anywhere offer their citizens: more than 2,000 free events across four days bring the near-totality of sitting Danish members of parliament into informal contact with any citizen who travels to Bornholm, an access level a conventional Copenhagen political conference could never replicate

02

The mystery stays covered

The deliberate choice to site the festival on an island away from the capital, modelled in part on Sweden's Almedalen Week, creates a camp-like atmosphere where politicians and citizens stay together for days rather than commuting in for scheduled appearances, reinforcing the informality that defines the event
