The story

Copenhell in Copenhagen

Copenhell has grown from a roughly 4,000-strong debut in 2010 into Denmark's largest heavy metal festival, running four days each June on Refshaleoen, a former Copenhagen shipyard now repurposed as an event district. Run by Live Nation Denmark, it programmes international and Nordic metal acts on stages carrying underworld-themed names across a site still marked by its industrial past.

Copenhell opened in 2010 with headliners Megadeth and Deftones drawing a crowd of roughly 4,000 to a former shipyard on the edge of Copenhagen, and has since grown into Denmark's largest heavy metal festival, now run by Live Nation Denmark across four days each June on the same site: Refshaleoen, the decommissioned Burmeister and Wain shipbuilding peninsula that closed in 1996 and has since been repurposed into one of Copenhagen's more distinctive event and creative districts.

What is special

The part that makes it specific.

01

The place changes

Copenhell's setting does real work for the music: Refshaleoen's disused cranes, warehouses and dock infrastructure give the festival a harder industrial backdrop than Denmark's more general summer festivals, and stage names drawn from underworld mythology extend the festival's own pun-based branding into the physical site

02

The mystery stays covered

Its single-genre focus on metal and subgenres, drawing on Scandinavia's outsized presence in international metal, sets it apart from Denmark's broader multi-genre festivals like Roskilde or NorthSide
