Horsens Medieval Festival in Horsens
Horsens Medieval Festival is held each late August at Faengslet, a former state penitentiary in the Jutland city of Horsens, and has grown from a 1992 anniversary market into what is described as Northern Europe's largest medieval festival. Free to attend, it draws around seventy thousand visitors to more than 280 stalls, knights, musicians and craftspeople over two days.
Horsens Medieval Festival began indirectly in 1992, when the city marked its 550th anniversary with a medieval market on the main town square that drew about twenty thousand visitors, a turnout that convinced organizers to repeat the idea.
