Skagen Festival, Denmark's oldest music festival, traces back to 1971 as Skagen Visefestival, a folk song gathering held at the former home of Skagen Painter Laurits Tuxen. It broadened into folk rock, jazz and blues and shortened its name in 1989, moving outdoors onto the sand dunes and harbour area from 1996, and has held the first weekend of July as its fixed date ever since.

Skagen Festival holds the title of Denmark's oldest music festival, tracing back to 1971, when it began as Skagen Visefestival, a song festival held at Tuxen's Villa, the former home of Laurits Tuxen, one of the Skagen Painters whose depictions of this northern Jutland fishing town's distinctive light made it famous in Danish art history.
