Sonderborg Ring Riding Festival in Sonderborg
The Sonderborg Ring Riding Festival, known locally as Ringridning, is one of Denmark's largest traditional equestrian festivals, held each July in the South Jutland town of Sonderborg. Riders in historic dress attempt to spear a small suspended ring with a lance while galloping, a centuries-old tradition tied closely to the region's Danish-German border identity.
Sonderjylland, the South Jutland region straddling the modern Danish-German border, has a history shaped by centuries of shifting national control, having been part of the Duchy of Schleswig, later under Prussian and German administration following the wars of the mid-nineteenth century, before a 1920 plebiscite returned the northern portion, including Sonderborg, to Denmark.
