The story

Inti Raymi Ingapirca in Ingapirca

Ecuador's Inti Raymi observance at Ingapirca, Canar province's Inca and Canari archaeological complex, brings indigenous groups from across the Andes together each June for roughly three days of dance, music, food and craft fairs staged directly among the ruins. Its setting atop the largest known Inca site in Ecuador, built over an earlier Canari ceremonial center, gives it a uniquely historical backdrop.

Inti Raymi at Ingapirca happens on top of a Canari ceremonial site the Inca themselves chose to build over rather than destroy.

What is special

The part that makes it specific.

01

The place changes

This is the only Ecuadorian Inti Raymi staged directly inside a major archaeological complex rather than a town plaza, using Ingapirca's elliptical Temple of the Sun, a shape unique among surviving Inca sun temples, as its literal backdrop

02

The mystery stays covered

The site's documented layering of an Inca temple built beside an earlier Canari temple associated with the moon gives the celebration a concrete architectural pairing of two distinct pre-Columbian cosmologies

03

The city starts moving

Formal backing from Ecuador's Ministry of Culture and Heritage and the National Institute of Cultural Heritage also gives this staging more institutional support than most community-organized Inti Raymi events elsewhere in the country
