The montubio identity took shape over generations along Ecuador's coastal lowlands, in the river basin fed by the Guayas and its tributaries, where mestizo farmers and cattle herders developed a culture distinct from both the Afro-Ecuadorian communities of the northern coast and the indigenous-Andean culture of the highlands.
