San Juan and Inti Raymi Otavalo in Otavalo
Otavalo's Inti Raymi pairs the Catholic feast of San Juan with the indigenous sun festival, opening with a pre-dawn ritual bath, Armay Tuta, at Peguche waterfall on June 22 and building to the toma de la plaza on June 24, when dancers from surrounding communities converge on the Plaza de los Ponchos and Bolivar park to symbolically reclaim the town center.
Otavalo's Inti Raymi opens before sunrise, when families wade into the cold water below Peguche waterfall for a ritual bath called Armay Tuta.
