The story

Festival Nacional de Teatro Escolar in Malabo/Bata

Festival Nacional de Teatro Escolar (FETES) is a national student theatre competition organized by Compania teatral Bocamandja with the Spanish Cultural Centers of Malabo and Bata, timed to the Day of the African Child. Up to thirty school productions on children's rights and values compete simultaneously in both cities each June, with cash prizes paid in CFA francs down to best actor and actress.

School theatre groups across Equatorial Guinea compete for cash prizes measured in CFA francs at the Festival Nacional de Teatro Escolar, a nine-edition-old competition that in 2025 doubled as the 20th anniversary of the theatre company that runs it.

What is special

The part that makes it specific.

01

The place changes

FETES structures itself as a genuinely national, dual-city competition rather than a single-school showcase: up to thirty selected productions split evenly, fifteen from the island region and fifteen from the mainland, compete in parallel in Malabo and Bata under a fixed thematic brief, children's rights, protection and values, and a strict thirty-minute staging limit

02

The mystery stays covered

Cash prizes tiered by region, down to individual best-actor and best-actress awards paid in CFA francs, and the reward of three additional home-region performances for regional winners, give the festival a formal competitive structure unusual for school-level theatre anywhere in Central Africa
