Seto Folk in Varska/Setomaa
A summer music festival in the lakeside spa town of Varska that puts Seto polyphonic singing, known as leelo and recognized by UNESCO, on the same stage as touring Estonian and international folk and world-music acts. Traditional dress, craft workshops and Seto food stalls run alongside the concerts, functioning as a living showcase for a small Orthodox Christian minority whose villages were split by the modern Estonia-Russia border.
Seto Folk built its programme around a singing style that UNESCO has listed as intangible cultural heritage: leelo, the polyphonic call-and-response singing of the Seto people, performed here alongside touring folk and world-music acts in the spa town of Varska near the Russian border.
