The story

Umhlanga Reed Dance in Ludzidzini Royal Residence/Lobamba

The Umhlanga Reed Dance is Eswatini's best-known annual ceremony, held over eight days at the end of August or start of September at the Ludzidzini Royal Residence in Lobamba. Tens of thousands of unmarried and childless young women travel from chiefdoms across the kingdom, and beyond, to cut reeds and present them to the Queen Mother in a ceremony central to Swazi royal and cultural life.

Each year, in the final days of August or the first days of September, tens of thousands of young Swazi women converge on the Ludzidzini Royal Residence in Lobamba, the cultural capital of Eswatini, for the Umhlanga, or Reed Dance, one of southern Africa's largest and most visually striking annual ceremonies.

What is special

The part that makes it specific.

01

The place changes

Few African cultural ceremonies operate at Umhlanga's scale: participants, known as imbali or maidens, travel from roughly two hundred chiefdoms across Eswatini, organized and registered by appointed chiefs for security, and sleep in relatives homes or nearby school classrooms for the duration of the event, turning the Ludzidzini area into a temporary small city each year

02

The mystery stays covered

The ceremony's culmination, a procession of maidens presenting freshly cut reeds to the Queen Mother, or Ndlovukati, at the royal residence, ties directly into Eswatini's system of absolute monarchy under the Dlamini royal family, giving the event a constitutional as well as cultural dimension rare among comparable rites

03

The city starts moving

In recent years, participants have also traveled from South Africa and beyond, extending the ceremony's reach past Eswatini's own borders
