Meskel Addis Ababa in Meskel Square/Addis Ababa
Meskel Square in Addis Ababa hosts Ethiopia's largest Demera bonfire on the Feast of the Cross, drawing clergy in ceremonial robes, Sunday school choirs, and crowds estimated in the hundreds of thousands around a towering cross-topped pole structure. UNESCO listed the wider Meskel tradition as intangible cultural heritage in 2013.
Meskel Square takes its very name from the holiday it hosts each year: a vast paved plaza built for exactly this kind of mass public gathering, and the site of Ethiopia's largest single Demera bonfire on the feast of the Finding of the True Cross.
