Solel Festival

Solel is North Wollo's name, centered on Woldiya, for the same late-August girls' festival known elsewhere as Ashenda, Ashendye, and Shadey, marking the end of the Filseta fast. Young women wear grass or leaves at the waist and sing house to house for gifts, in a town-level version of the tradition that remains far less documented than its Tigray and Lalibela counterparts.

Solel is the name carried in Ethiopia's North Wollo zone, particularly around Woldiya and the wider Raya-Kobo area, by the same late-August girls' and young women's festival known elsewhere as Ashenda in Tigray, Ashendye in Lalibela, and Shadey around Sekota, all marking the close of the sixteen-day Filseta fast tied to the Feast of the Dormition of the Virgin Mary.
