Helsinki City Marathon, held since 1981, is Finland's oldest and largest marathon, run each May since a 2018 shift from its original summer date and rebranding as Helsinki City Run. Helsinki's marathon tradition began in 1981, when the inaugural Helsinki City Marathon was held in July and won by Sinikka Toropainen and Gunther Mielke, establishing what would become the largest and oldest marathon event in Finland and the oldest marathon in Scandinavia.
