Lux Helsinki, running since 2009 in early January, lights up Helsinki's city center with free outdoor art installations by Finnish and international artists during the capital's darkest winter weeks. The festival has steadily expanded from its original four-day format to a longer edition, with one recent edition drawing around four hundred fifty thousand visitors to walk between roughly twenty illuminated artworks.
Lux Helsinki began in 2009 as a way to bring light and public art into Helsinki's darkest weeks, timed deliberately to early January when the Finnish capital sees only a few hours of weak daylight, and the festival has run every winter since, expanding gradually over the years from an original four-day format toward a longer edition that organizers have signaled will eventually bridge New Year's Eve.
