Kaustinen Folk Music Festival in Kaustinen
Kaustinen Folk Music Festival, first held in 1968, is the biggest folk music and dance festival in the Nordic countries, built around a local fiddle tradition sustained continuously for more than 250 years and inscribed on UNESCO's Intangible Cultural Heritage list in 2021. Held each July, it now draws forty to fifty thousand visits, including thousands of amateur musicians alongside professional performers.
The Kaustinen Folk Music Festival held its first edition in 1968, when organizers expected around six thousand visitors but drew more than three times that figure instead, an early sign of the appetite that would make the festival the biggest folk music and dance gathering in the Nordic countries.
