Sommelo Ethno Music Festival in Kuhmo

Sommelo, founded by the Juminkeko Foundation in 2005 and settled into its current annual format in 2006, is an international ethno music festival spanning Kainuu in eastern Finland and neighboring Viena Karelia in Russia. Its programming stages contemporary ethno musicians alongside traditional runo singers, supplemented by workshops, seminars, and art exhibitions, and is now organized by the Pro Sommelo association.

The Juminkeko Foundation founded the Sommelo ethno music festival in 2005, building directly on folk music research the foundation had carried out in and around Kuhmo since the late 1990s, and the event settled into its current annual summer format the following year, in 2006.
