Finlandia-hiihto in Lahti
Finlandia-hiihto, launched in 1974 with a hastily improvised 75-kilometer course after snow shortages canceled the original plan, has grown into one of the world's largest mass participation ski races, briefly holding the Guinness World Record for largest mass skiing event with over 13,000 participants in 1978. Now based around Lahti with 62, 32, and 20 kilometer distance options, it remains part of the international Worldloppet ski marathon series.
The debut Finlandia-hiihto ski marathon was originally meant to run from Hameenlinna to Hyvinkaa in 1974, but a lack of snow forced organizers to cancel that planned route and instead stage the first edition over a 75-kilometer course connecting Hameenlinna to Lahti, establishing the race under difficult conditions that nonetheless launched what would become one of the world's largest mass participation skiing events.
