The story

Lahti Fringe Festival in Lahti

Lahti Fringe Festival, first held in 2018 through an EU-funded urban culture project, brings around 150 international artists to roughly seventy venues across Lahti, including ordinary shops and a shopping center, following the open-access fringe format as part of the Nordic Fringe Network. A second edition ran in 2019, establishing an early annual pattern for the festival.

Lahti Fringe Festival held its first edition from 29 August to 1 September 2018, developed through an EU-funded project intended to build both a concept and a year-round customer service model for supporting urban cultural events in the city, giving the festival an unusually structured, institutionally supported starting point compared to many fringe festivals that grow organically from a smaller grassroots base.

What is special

The part that makes it specific.

01

The place changes

Lahti Fringe Festival's deliberate placement of performances inside ordinary commercial spaces, shops, small business premises, and a shopping center, alongside more conventional venues, spreads the festival unusually deep into the city's everyday fabric rather than concentrating performances in dedicated theatres alone

02

The mystery stays covered

Its open-access format, connected through the Nordic Fringe Network to a wider circuit of similar events, let its 2018 debut draw around 150 artists from ten EU countries plus Australia, China, Norway, and the United States without a curatorial selection process filtering participation
