The story

Savonlinna Opera Festival in Savonlinna

Savonlinna Opera Festival stages performances inside the fifteenth-century Olavinlinna Castle each summer, a tradition begun in 1912 by soprano Aino Ackte and continuously revived since 1967. The medieval courtyard setting and long Finnish summer evenings give the festival a distinctive character, drawing around sixty thousand attendees annually, a quarter of them from abroad.

Aino Ackte, a Finnish soprano already celebrated on opera stages abroad, attended a nationalist gathering inside Savonlinna's Olavinlinna Castle in 1907 and recognized the medieval fortress as a natural stage, leading directly to the first Savonlinna Opera Festival in 1912, staged inside the castle Ackte herself directed for five summers with a program built around Finnish opera.

What is special

The part that makes it specific.

01

The place changes

Few opera festivals anywhere stage productions inside a functioning medieval fortress: Olavinlinna, built in 1475 and the northernmost surviving medieval stone castle, gives Savonlinna's productions an open-air courtyard setting framed by centuries-old towers and ramparts rather than a conventional proscenium stage

02

The mystery stays covered

Performances often run into the long, lingering daylight of the Finnish summer evening, adding a further layer specific to this far-northern setting, while the festival's roots trace to soprano Aino Ackte's direct staging of the first edition in 1912
