Provinssi in Seinäjoki
Provinssi, founded in 1979 as Provinssirock, grew from a grassroots punk-rock cooperative into one of Finland's largest summer festivals. After financial trouble in the early 1990s and a 2015 sale to a commercial operator that prompted its rebranding, the festival now draws up to eighty-five thousand visitors over three days each late June to Seinajoki's riverside Tornavansaari park.
Provinssi began in 1979 as Provinssirock, organized as a cooperative venture driven by local music enthusiasts in Seinajoki, with promoter Juha Koivisto playing a pivotal early role in shaping the festival's punk-rock identity through the late 1970s and 1980s.
