Blockfest in Tampere
Blockfest, launched in 2008 when hip-hop had almost no presence in Finnish mainstream culture, has grown into one of the Nordic region's biggest hip-hop and R&B festivals, held each August in Tampere. Recent editions have hosted more than forty artists across multiple stages, drawing record attendance of around eighty thousand across its events and selling out in advance every year.
Blockfest launched in 2008 at a moment when hip-hop had almost no institutional presence in Finnish popular culture, with no domestic radio stations playing the genre and no major music festivals booking hip-hop or R&B acts, making the new Tampere festival a deliberate bet on a genre the mainstream Finnish festival circuit had largely ignored.
